SCHOOLS will now close next week as government moves to avert potential health disaster owing to Corona virus (Covid-19) which has been declared a World epidemic.
President Emerson Mnangagwa issued a directive that will see all schools and tertiary institutions closing door on March 24 in response to concerns raised over the risks posed by their continued opening.
“Following concerns from parents,as well as representations by the educational sector , government has decided that all schools and tertiary institutions (colleges, polytechnics, and Universities )will now close on Tuesday 24 March 2020 as a precaution against outbreak and spread of coronavirus,”he said.
The statement comes hardly a week after Mnangagwa’s Cabinet had said there will be no need to disturb pupils and students insisting they will close on schedule.
“As l announced on Tuesday 17 March , government will advise dates for the reopening of all teaching institutions in the country once the threat of the virus is adjudged to have receded,” he said.
Zimbabwe continues to insist that it is yet to record a case COVID-19 saying the measures to close schools and colleges was just a safety precaution.
“The date of 24 March should allow for an orderly closure of our institutions and for parents to arrange for the safe travel of pupils and students,” Mnangagwa said.
